Book Review: Like Water for Chocolate

By: Laura Esquirel

Rating: 3 stars.

This book was generally good.  I think much was lost in the translation, and I wish I was fluent enough in Spanish to read it in the original language.  Although, without knowing how the original was written, it may be that the author’s writing style is just very choppy and short.  Even tragic events were glossed over matter-of-factly.  It was a quick read, and I enjoyed reading about rural Mexican cultures and the traditions that follow them (although, I disagree with a lot of them…the youngest daughter never being able to marry, for example).  Definitely worth a read if you’re looking for an entertaining story.
