Book Review: Walking on Broken Glass

By: Christa Allan
Rating: 4 stars

This book looked interesting—the story of a fictional alcoholic who “had it all”–a phenomenal husband, loads of money, great friends, a beautiful house…the list goes on. Shortly after the book begins, the main character heads to rehab, and the reader realizes slowly that her entire life has been a facade, masked by drinking and others’ expectations. I think this book has a deeper lesson than many others I’ve read lately—be true to yourself. A really phenomenal secondary lesson related to relationships is that a relationship has to be based on intimacy—a shared common bond that’s built through experience, friendship, and trust. With those things, love (and the resulting intimacy) will surface.

Reading this book made me think a lot about my relationship with Eric. I can’t imagine spending my life with someone else—not only do we have fun together every day, we make each other the best versions of ourselves we know how to be. Without him, I’d be a radically different person than who I’ve grown to be. I’m thankful that he’s my best friend, the person I turn to above all others, and the one person I trust more than any other.
