Pain is temporary, pride is forever.
In my life, I’ve run six marathons, five half marathons, and two half-ironmans. In every one of those races, I would think of this quote, and finish as strong as I was able at the time. It’s 100% accurate. I started running in the fall of 2003, and have been running marathons since 2004. I’ve run Chicago (2004, 2006), Disney (2007, 2008, 2009 and January 2011), and Paris (2008). I remember every single one of those races–the good and the bad. But the one thing I remember most is the feeling of crossing the finish line. Months of training, more support than I could have ever asked for from friends and family, on top of the previous 25 miles, always made me an emotional wreck for the last 1.2 miles. The pride of crossing the finish line, the joy of knowing I achieved another goal on my bucket list (and the excitement of eating at the finish) will be with me forever.
