This week, I finished the book Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness, by Scott Jurek. I loved it! It was part auto-biography, and part lifestyle story about the author’s foray into vegetarianism, and then veganism. I can’t wait to try some of the recipes in the book.
I had heard of Scott Jurek through reading Runner’s World every month. I learned a little more about him when I read about the Tarahumara in Born to Run, by Christopher McDougall. What I knew of him going into his own book was that he was an ultrarunner, who was highly respected in the running world, and who was strong enough to hold his own against the Tarahumara both on his turf and on theirs.
Eat & Run was a really good book. The story is told in such a way that I just wanted to keep reading. It was tough to put the book down every night. I love that Scott lets readers into his whole life–not just the sugar-coated life he wants people to see. Through reading this book, I saw that he was a real person, with real struggles, and a real personality. The book definitely helped me think about the type of runner, eater, and person that I wanted to be. I’d definitely recommend reading this, and I give it 4.5 stars.
Next week, I hope to have finished Fed Up with Lunch! I’m about halfway through it now.
What are you reading this week?
