Knowing Food Lion is giving away a kitchen makeover got me thinking. What would I change in my kitchen if I won? I love most things about our kitchen, but there are a couple of costly projects that I’d want to take on.

Our kitchen is “U” shaped, and has a short hallway connecting it to the powder room. The pantry lines one side of the hallway, and the laundry closet lines the other side of the hallway. First, I’d move the laundry closet upstairs, instead of having it right next to the kitchen. I would turn this space into a walk-in pantry, with custom shelving for my less-frequently used appliances, dry goods, etc. I would put slender matching countertops in here, so that I could assemble basic dishes in my new pantry.

I would then install a double oven (with double oven and convection oven) right next to the fridge, where we currently have a desk. This would eliminate the need for an oven under our stove, and I’d install cabinetry under a stand-alone cooktop where the stove currently is. Next to the new double oven, I’d install a wine chiller on the bottom, and fit a thin cabinet above for bakeware.

Finally, I’d take the electronic components we keep on the desk in the kitchen, get a mac mini, and a screen that drops down from underneath the top cabinets so that I could continue to use the computer for what I use it for most–cooking. With a wireless keyboard and mouse, it would be fully functional. Finish with some under-cabinet lighting, a new backsplash, and a couple of new rugs and dish towels, and I’d be set!

Tell me: What would you change in your kitchen if you won $25,000?

  1. I would have to change the whole thing!! My house is over 40 years old and nothing has been done to it. At the very least, new cabinets and counter tops.
